Portraying children in a modern way

My clients are people who appreciate photography as much as I do, and I frequently get to hear from them how much they love my photos of their children or from their weddings. But the thing is that, It’s not just that they are happy to get a photo of their child smiling into the camera or a formal wedding photo.

They tell me, (and they all say pretty much the same thing), that what really makes them love my work is that I manage to capture the personality in my subjects. It’s not just a head-shot/passport photo, but they see the things in my photos that they also see in their children, when at home, in everyday life. The thoughtfulness, happiness, the joy of trying new things. Learning something new everyday, and the excitement, concentration and joy when the child manage to do this. The crying when they hurt themselves or when one of their friends just stole their favourite toy. Or the sheer happiness of playing with friends , just letting go and play, play, play. Having fun and love life.

My passion is to capture my subjects while they are experiencing all those feelings, wether it’s a child playing or a bride and groom celebrating their wedding day. I’m so fortunate to be able to do this for a living and in many ways I’m just like the children whom get totally caught up in their play. I to am drawn to that magic place when holding my camera, nothing else matters in that moment and I’m totally in the zone.

I don’t say that you can’t get good photographs in a studio but it’s much harder to let the children play as they want to if you have a spot that they must sit still in. And this kills the spontaneity that makes a photograph to that special capture of someone’s soul.

This is why I almost always shoot outside or in my client’s home, this is modern childrens portraiture.

And me and my clients love it…
